9-Men Spindles Earn their First Victory in the UPL at Home
Spindles 1 - 0 Patroon
35’ - Kankam (Trestick)
Spindles United (0-2) welcomed Patroon United (2-0) for a highly competitive UPL fixture and the club’s first-ever competitive home match.
More than 150 people showed out to our first home match at the Waterford Turf Field & Track. A beautiful complex that we are grateful to the school district for allowing use this year.
After a difficult start to the season, Spindles were determined to turn the page in front of their home supporters. The match opened at a frantic pace, with both sides battling for control. Spindles held the early advantage, creating several promising opportunities, but once again struggled to find the finishing touch.
That changed midway through the first half.
After absorbing pressure, Spindles launched a quick counterattack. The ball found Anders Trestick, who burst forward on a dazzling 40-yard run before delivering a perfectly weighted pass across the box. Waiting at the far post was David Kankam, who calmly slotted home to score both his first goal of the season and the first UPL goal in club history, giving Spindles a 1-0 lead, 35’.
The intensity continued to rise as both teams exchanged chances, but Spindles carried their advantage into halftime.
Patroon emerged from the break with renewed energy, pressing higher and committing numbers forward in search of an equalizer. Both clubs knew how important the three points would be, and every challenge reflected it.
The match took a dramatic turn early in the second half when a Spindles defender was shown a straight red card following a tackle, reducing the hosts to 10 men.
Spindles reorganized and dug in defensively, but the adversity was not over.
Minutes later, a Patroon counterattack forced the Spindles goalkeeper into a desperate challenge outside the box. Following a collision and handball, the referee produced a second red card, leaving Spindles with just nine players on the field.
With no substitute goalkeeper available, captain Marcos Lopez stepped up and volunteered to take his place between the posts.
Facing a two-man disadvantage and a midfielder in net, Spindles knew it would take a complete team effort to see out the result.
What followed was a remarkable display of resilience, discipline, and determination. Every player committed fully to the defensive effort, covering ground, winning tackles, and putting their bodies on the line to protect the lead.
Despite being down two players, Spindles remained dangerous on the counterattack and came close to extending their advantage on several occasions.
Patroon threw everything forward in the closing stages, but Spindles refused to break.
When the final whistle sounded, the home crowd erupted as Spindles secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory, earning the club’s first win of the season and first competitive home victory.
New addition Ethan Valente was named Man of the Match after an outstanding performance, showcasing an incredible work rate and rising to the demands of a fiercely contested match.
Spindles United (1-2) will look to build on the momentum next week when they return home to face United Soccer Group (0-2).
