Spindles United FC Earn Hard-Fought 1-0 Victory Over United Soccer Group

WATERFORD, N.Y. — Spindles United FC (2-0-2) hosted United Soccer Group (USG) (1-1-2) on Sunday evening at Waterford-Halfmoon Turf, with both sides entering the match looking to improve to 2-0-2 on the season.

The match also marked a milestone for the club as Spindles United held its first-ever live stream, featuring commentary from Ben Kellis and Papa Ndiaye. Fans can watch the full match replay here.

The veteran Spindles side faced a youthful and energetic USG squad, and it was the home team that looked the more dangerous side early. Spindles controlled much of the possession in the opening stages and created several promising attacking opportunities.

The breakthrough came in the 18th minute. Ethan Valente collected the ball and glided through the USG defense before attempting to round the goalkeeper. The USG keeper brought Valente down inside the penalty area, earning Spindles a penalty kick.

Captain John Locicero stepped up and confidently buried his effort into the top corner, giving Spindles a 1-0 lead. The goal marked another historic moment for the club, as Locicero recorded his 20th career goal for Spindles United FC, extending his record as the club’s all-time leading scorer.

The remainder of the first half saw chances for both sides, with Spindles continuing to threaten in attack but unable to add to their advantage. The home side entered halftime leading 1-0.

USG emerged from the break with renewed energy, pressing aggressively and looking determined to find an equalizer. The visitors enjoyed extended spells of possession throughout the second half and generated several dangerous attacking moments.

Despite the pressure, Spindles once again delivered a disciplined defensive performance. The back line remained organized, dealing effectively with USG’s direct play and limiting quality scoring opportunities.

The match continued to go back and forth throughout the final 45 minutes, but neither side could find another breakthrough. Spindles ultimately held firm to secure a 1-0 victory and their second clean sheet of the season.

For his match-winning goal and overall attacking impact, John Locicero was named Man of the Match.
