Vassi 3 - 1 Spindles 66' - Jack Phillips (Ryan Breen)
In just their second year as a club, Spindles United took on CDSL giants Vassi Realty in the league final on Thursday night.
The wet summer of 2023 continued into Thursday night's final, leaving a wet, foggy, and humid event.
The match started strong for Vassi, who scored the opening goal 3 minutes in, 1-0.
As the fog continued to creep in, Vassi did not slow down looking to add to their lead with several dangerous chances.
Eventually, the Spins settled in and started creating ideas.
The rest of the first half was back and forth between both sides.
By the half, Vassi had a 1-0 lead with the Spins hungry to bounce back.
However this was shortly shot down after Vassi pushed forward straight off kickoff to make it 2-0 less than a minute into the second half, 45'.
Nott Road was silent.
However as the timer continued to tick away, the Spindles United record attendance crowd of 156 really made their presence heard.
By the 66' forward Ryan Breen found himself attacking the wing and setting up a weak footed cross into the box. Forwrd Jack Phillips was on the other end for a towering header over the defenders and past the keeper, 2-1. Phillips first goal for the club.
The crowd roared as the Spins scored their first finals goal in what looked like the beginning of a dramatic comeback.
However, the match continued to give chances to both sides, eventually leading to a 90' goal by Vassi to seal their 3rd CDSL Championship title in a row.
Spindles United finish second in the league, their highest finish since joining the CDSL last year.
What seemed to be a night to forget, actually became one to remember forever.
Almost 160 supporters packed Nott Road. Some drove great distances to see the Spins live on Thursday night.
It was clear that this final meant more than just winning silverware.
Instead it showed how far the greatest grassroots club in the world has come in just 2 years. And more importantly, how far it can go.
