With the sun shining in the Capital Region again, the Spins return to winning ways.
Sunday night's affair with Backheel FC was the first round of the 2023 CDSL Playoffs. Spindles (#3) and Backheel (#6) both came looking for a spot in the semi-finals.
The match was a battle between both sides.
The first half saw a handful of chances and heated play from both sides.
A dramatic night for the 80+ spectators who watched on.
Luckily, the Spins opened the scoring with a strong run from Moulay Ahmed Aladlouni down the wing for a touch to the middle for an easy finish for Ryan Breen, 35'. His second of the season.
Shortly after in the 43', Ben Kellis pressed the keeper with the ball at his feet, and forced an error that led to a deflected goal of Kellis for his first of the season and club career.
Confidence was high at the break. The Spins were hungry for more.
However, things quickly became shaky when the Spins gave up a penalty 3 minutes into the second half. A powered shot down the middle brought the Heels within 1.
Both sides pressed the rest of the match in search for another crucial goal.
Chance after chance left everyone wondering if this match was going to flip over on its head.
With a 1 minute left, Backheel get a break and push it out wide to an unmarked forward , leaving him 1v1 with keeper Josh Marer.
Marer came up big making a diving save to push the ball wide, securing the Spins lead and saving their season.
The final whistle blew shortly after for a score of 2-1 Spindles.
Man of the Match was awarded to Jimmy Alexander.
Alexander controled the game in the back, middle and final third for all 90 minutes.
As great as the win felt, the Spins knew that the job is far from done.
