After weeks of rescheduling due to Canadian Wildfires, Matchweek 5 against Backheel FC finally occurred last night at Nott Road.
It's safe to say it was worth the wait for Spindles United.
After weeks of struggling to start matches strong, the Spins changed that narrative early on this hot summer night. An opening goal 7 minutes in from a beautiful run down the wing by Drew Michel and tucked in the corner for the lead—his first of the season.
2 minutes later, Captain Jad Essoulaimani lifted one of his signature freekicks over the wall and past the keeper for 2-0.
By the 16', Moulay Ahmed Aladlouni extended the lead to 3 from a heading pass by Ethan Behan. Aladlouni's first of the season.
Just before the half, Michel blessed the crowd with another magical run down the stretch and perfectly served Zeidane Adjei for a quick 1-2 finish. His first of the season.
Backheel came out strong in the second half, however, the Spins continued to create chances.
In the 59', Behan netted his first of the match after a miscommunication in the opposition's defense, extending the lead to 5-0.
Reggie Esconde closed out the scoring in the 80' with a shot from no angle at the end line, catching the keeper off his line. Set up by a long pass by Danny Sanchez. Esconde's first of the season brought the Spins to a 6-0 lead.
A well-earned clean sheet by Jordan Prouty and his defense was taken in the 89', settling a final score of 6-1 Spindles.
With 1 goal and 1 assist, Michel was easily awarded the Man of the Match. Michel played a crucial role in both the attack and defense.
Although the win brought Spindles to the top of the league, there is no time to celebrate as they go back to work this Tuesday, June 27 at 8 PM to take on second-place Vassi Realty.
