Spindles United entered Sunday night’s matchup with everything to play for.

Sitting at 4-2-3, Spindles welcomed the Sacandaga Lakers (3-1-5) to Waterford-Halfmoon in a highly anticipated UPL matchup. With the regular season winding down, Spindles were looking to improve their playoff position, while Sacandaga entered the night fighting to secure their place in the postseason.

By the final whistle, Spindles had made a statement.

Five goals. A clean sheet. And first place in the UPL.

The match began with Spindles taking control of possession, moving the ball with purpose and looking to dictate the tempo. Sacandaga dropped into a defensive shape, hoping to absorb the pressure and create opportunities on the counterattack.

After several early chances narrowly missed the final touch, Spindles finally broke through in the 15th minute.

A shot from Ty Plumley deflected off a Sacandaga defender, sending the ball directly into the path of Matt Rabadi just outside the 18-yard box. Rabadi took an excellent first touch to set himself up before calmly slotting the ball past the keeper and into the bottom corner. 1-0, 15’.

The goal marked Rabadi’s second of the season and gave Spindles the early advantage.

The remainder of the first half followed a similar script. Spindles controlled possession and continued to probe for openings, but the Sacandaga defense and goalkeeper stood tall, keeping the Lakers within striking distance.

Spindles carried their 1-0 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Spindles looked to continue where they left off — controlling possession, breaking down the Sacandaga defense and creating chances in the final third.

The chances continued to come, but Spindles struggled to find the finishing touch.

That changed in the 61st minute.

A high press from Anders Trestick forced a mistake on a Sacandaga backpass, with the goalkeeper sending a wayward ball directly into the path of Ryan Breen. Breen quickly took advantage, winning possession before shifting the ball onto his left foot and calmly finishing to double the Spindles lead. 2-0, 61’.

It was Breen’s second UPL goal of the season.

The second goal only seemed to fuel Spindles further.

Just four minutes later, in the 65th minute, some excellent combination play found Trestick in space. The midfielder delivered an incisive pass between two Sacandaga defenders, perfectly picking out the darting run of Rabadi.

Rabadi found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and made no mistake.

He calmly slotted the ball home for his second goal of the night, completing his brace and giving Spindles a commanding 3-0 lead. 3-0, 65’.

Rabadi’s second goal brought his total to three UPL goals on the season.

Spindles continued to push forward as the game entered its final stages, and in the 82nd minute, they struck again.

On the counterattack, John Locicero received the ball deep in the middle third. Rather than slowing the attack down, Locicero delivered a perfectly weighted cross-field through ball, splitting multiple defenders and finding Trestick in stride.

Trestick carried the ball into the box before calmly placing his shot into the bottom corner. 4-0, 82’.

The goal marked Trestick’s sixth UPL goal of the season, adding another tally to an already impressive campaign.

But Spindles still weren’t finished.

With the Lakers struggling to contain the attack, more chances continued to fall the hosts’ way. In the 89th minute, Spindles once again controlled possession and worked the ball forward to Daniel Primeau.

Primeau cut inside before finding Zeidane Adjei, who appeared to be in an offside position. However, a Sacandaga defender had kept Adjei onside, allowing play to continue.

Adjei made no mistake.

He buried the opportunity to make it five. 5-0, 89’.

The final whistle soon followed, sealing a dominant victory for the hosts.

Spindles United finished the regular season with a 5-2-3 record, scoring 18 goals while conceding just 10, good for a +8 goal difference.

But the biggest result of the night came away from Waterford-Halfmoon.

After United Soccer Group and Patroon United played to a 3-3 draw, Spindles United officially moved to the top of the UPL table, securing first place heading into the playoffs.

The regular season is over.

Now, the real work begins.

Man of the Match: Matt Rabadi — Rabadi controlled the midfield and stamped his authority on the game with a brace, helping lead Spindles to a dominant 5-0 victory.
